Update 11/13-12/4 Frustrated

Okay I know it has been a long time since I have updated my progress, but I was busy wallowing in my own self pity.  I had all good intentions of posting up after our first 20k benchmark on 11/20  with my time and how great the run felt.  Well the run did go well, so I thought.  About 2 hours after the run I started to get a pain in my left Achilles and by Sunday morning it was very uncomfortable and there was a knot about 1.5 inches up from the bottom of my foot.  Monday morning I called the Dr. and she was able to work me in later that day.  I went in hoping for a diagnosis of Achilles Tendinitis but instead I heard the words that I probably have a partial tear, but she is hopeful that we caught it soon enough that anti-inflammatory, rest and rehab will fix me up and get back on the road.

This weekend I have made some great progress. I was able to Mt. Bike 16.65 miles Saturday and I did 5 miles on the elliptical and walked 1.5 miles on the treadmill with no pain.  I have also been able to execute calf raises with no pain this weekend as well.  So I am very hopeful that I will be cleared to run this week in PT.   The marathon is less than 3 months away and I can not miss much more training.

Update 10/17-11/06 It should not be this cold here.

I have discovered that running in the colder weather is great, however I am starting to wonder if I should invest in some running pants.  My major concern is that I will get to warm.  A couple of runs over the last three weeks the temp has been in the high 30s.  I know you people back in Idaho are thinking that is not cold, but once you factor in the little bit of humidity it tends to feel more like the 20s. At this point I think I will stay with my shorts, short sleeve shirt, arm warmers, gloves, running hat and ear warmers, I like the ability to easily remove the parts as I get further in the run and start to warm up.

Another thing I have discovered running in cold weather is that I need to really watch my water intake.  It is really easy to forget to drink water when you are not drenched in sweat.

3.5 months away from the marathon, how exciting is that?

Update 9/17 No Garmin for the long run, and Hill repeats

I forgot to charge my Garmin and now I have no proof that I ran 10 miles on Saturday, what am I going to do?????  Oh yeah I am going to run 10 miles again next week, it will all be okay.  I am not sure I liked the naked feeling of running without any knowledge of how far or long I had ran.  It may not have been so bad had the Garmin not still been strapped onto my wrist making snide comments about how I forgot to charge the damn thing.  Hopefully I will charge it from now on.

So this week on our training schedule we had hill training scheduled for Tuesday.  I, in my infinite wisdom, figured this would be a piece of cake since I run hills everyday in my neighborhood.  BOY WAS I WRONG.  I ran eight hill repeats on what I heard others call, the hill from hell, and it was all I could do to keep everything I had eaten that day inside my body.

Hill from hell

After completing the hill repeats I had to take Brock to batting practice, so no ice bath.  This as I found out the next day was a big mistake.  My legs were very sore and I was sure my tempo run scheduled for Thursday was not going to go well.

Update 9/26 10/3 10/10

Wow is all I can really say, the last three weeks of training have been great.  The long runs are getting longer but yet seem shorter, the hills are becoming routine and the weather has been spectacular.  As for the long runs getting longer but seeming shorter, I owe that all to the Round Rock Fit training group, you guys rock.

Lessons learned:

The second pair of properly fitting shoes are not as comfortable as the first.

Mexican food the night before a long run is not such a great idea.

Shotblocks are very chewy when it is cold outside.

Need to find a stronger laundry detergent.

Weekly 9/5 9/12 9/19

Wow that three weeks went by really fast.  Kassidy has started Soccer, Brock has started baseball, bought a new car and I have been very busy at work.  The other day I put in a vote for 26 hour days, I think with 2 extra hours I would be able to get everything done.

Over the last three weeks I have had to fight a rib injury for the first two and an ankle injury for the last two.  ICE has become a huge friend of mine.  This last Saturday they brought two trash cans full of Ice Water to stand in after the run.  The first two minutes were hell but after that everything went numb.  As I am writing today I must say the whole body feels really good.

Lessons Learned:
KFC two hours before a run is not recommended.

ICE is my friend.

Running in a Group is a lot of fun and makes the time fly.  (Thanks to all my Round Rock Fit friends)

It is starting to feel like a real possibility.

Weekly Update 8/22 8/29

Week 8/22
8/21 was the first official group run with Round Rock Fit, actually it was a 3 mile pace run to determine the group that we would be in.  I must say I felt guilty because the pace run was only three miles and Saturday is supposed to be my long run.  I am really glad that I decided to join the group and have already met many great people with the same goal in mind, to finish the marathon.  One of the guys in the group was 70+ years old and has ran 49 marathons in the past 7 years, AMAZING.

Week 8/29
Another great week of running increased my miles back up a notch and everything was going well.  Then on 8/29 I was headed to do some cross training on my Mt. Bike and I was in a car accident and totaled my vehicle, which is also the reason I am late with this post.  Luckily there were no major injuries, just some bruised ribs.  I was actually able to run both Monday and Tuesday, however today my ribs are pretty sore so I may take Thursday off, we will see how I feel in the morning.

Weekly Update 8/8 , 8/15

Okay so it is two weeks in one, that is probably better anyway.  I have to say the last two weeks have went well overall, but man has it been hot.  I always try to run in the morning before the heat sets in but lately it has been in the low 80s around 6 in the morning with the humidity of 80%.  Which is still better than midday when it is 98 with a heat index of 105 or above.  After two summers in a row you get used to it but you still cannot wait for the cooler weather.  I hope the Broncos practice in the indoor facility is really giving them a feel for the humidity they are going to experience at FedEx Field on Sept 6th.

This next weekend I am going to join a local training program to help me train for the marathon.  I think it will be good to find some peeps with the same goal to help keep me on track.

Could I run a marathon next week?
Not yet but I think I could complete a half, if my life depended on it.

Weekly Update 8/1/2010

Another week with no aches or pains which is great and I was able to increase my mileage output.  I still need to try and figure out how to get my body to stop wanting to relieve itself while I am on longer runs.  Most info I have found has said to get up and move around before the run,  the issue I have here is I really do not want to wake up any earlier than 5:00am.  I am ready for it to be the fall so I can start to run a little later in the day, right now it is just to damn hot.

On a complete side note my parents will be coming into town next Thursday, the kids have no idea, what a great surprise it will be.

Could I run a marathon next week?
A friend pointed out that it would be like me running to work.  Damn that is a long way.

Weekly Update 7/25/2010

Overall this week was again pain free, I think I am finally completely over my ankle injury. I have learned a few new things over the last few weeks that I need to prepare for on the longer runs. Number one is the whole nipple soreness that men can experience, for a second there I thought I was going through puberty again, what a scary thought. The second important thing I discovered is how uncomfortable it is to be 3.5 miles from your home and/or public restroom, then you finally reach home and realize you did not bring your keys and code to the garage door will not work. Not to mention that you find out your 5 year old daughter has actually listened to you and will not open the door without permission and your wife is still asleep upstairs. Luckily everyone responded in time and there was no embarrassing situation.

Could I run a marathon next week?
It seems like a very remote possibility.

Weekly Update 7/18/2010

Overall this was a successful week. I was able to run 4 days and besides my left Hammy being a little stiff the last couple of days there is really no aches or pains to speak of. Plus I got in two rides on my Mt. Bike this week 12+ miles each ride.

Could I run a marathon next week?

Weekly Update 7/11/2010

So this week went pretty well. I was able to run three days this week, my goal was to run four, however after the second run my left adductor was really sore again, so I took to days off and found some new exercises to help strengthen the muscle, http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285--13543-0,00.html . I have to admit I never would have tried these before because the do not involve lifting any weight, but I will be the first to admit you can really feel them working. For my third run of the week I left the friendly confines of my neighborhood and went and ran on the Brushy Creek trail, I think I will try and make this run a little more frequent, it is shaded and really relaxing.

I decided to start and ask myself the same question every week. Could I run a marathon next week?
NOT A CHANCE!!!!
Hopefully this answer will change by the end of this journey.

Weekly Update 7/4/2010

Well this has been an interesting week. On Monday I decided to get my foot checked out by a Doctor and after he looked at the X-Rays he informed me that I may have a hairline fracture and that I will need to wear an air cast for 6-8 weeks to allow it to heal. Luckily the radiologist read the X-ray a little different and stated that the fracture was from a previous injury and that it was healed, also he stated that there appears to be no further damage to the bone or the tissue.

This week I only ran one day, Saturday, and I will also take it very easy this week to allow my ankle to fully heal. It is very strange because I feel no pain when walking or running but I still feel discomfort when I point my toes forward as far as I can.

Weekly Update 6/27/2010

After wrecking on my Mt. Bike and injuring my ankle I was still able to run this week. However after my run on Friday I had a lot of pain in what i believe was my left adductor muscle. Obviously I was favoring my right ankle more than I thought. So with this I decided to skip my long run on Saturday and have a true day of rest, cross-trained on the Mt Bike today.

Set back already

Sunday morning I wrecked on my MTB coming off a drop. When I crashed I hit my Lateral malleolus on my right foot directly on a rock. It is twice the size as my left foot. It is feeling better today so I am going to try and go on a short run tonight.

A brief history

Over the last one and a half years I have changed my life in many ways. Those of you that have known me for a long time, know that around the age of 30, I had reached my peak weight at 237lbs(5'10"). At that point I still thought that I was in decent shape and had just added on a few extra pounds. I was playing racket ball, and basketball every once in a while with friends and I would notice that my surgically repaired knee would always hurt. Obviously there must be something wrong so I made an appointment with the doctor. Thank god he was honest, after taking x-rays and moving my knee in multiple different directions, his comment was something like, you are fat and you have no muscle supporting your joints. This was a real eye opener, so I immediately signed up at the local gym and began to change my life.

In November of 2008, now at the age of 35, my family and I moved to Round Rock(Austin) TX. At this point I was still going to gym on a regular basis and had brought my weight down to 195lbs, not to bad for a guy who never used a trainer. Here I was again thinking that I was i good shape and at most a few pounds over weight.

In March of 2009 my wife and I picked up the sport of Mt. biking and soon after joined the Austin Ridge Riders. At our first event I remember thinking how I went to the gym 4 days a week so I would be ready to hang with the fast riders. At about mile 3 with the beginning group I was ready to die, obviously not ready for the fast group. See, even though I had been lifting for the last 4 years I had not been doing any real cardio for the last 3 years. Of course with my logical thinking I came to the conclusion that if I just kept riding once a week I would be able to hang with the fast group, ha ha. Fast forward to January of 2010 and I still could not ride with the fast group, but at least I was riding with the intermediates.

In the first week of 2010 on my way to work I heard a local DJ talking about how he was going to set a goal to work out for 45 days straight, that was just the motivation I needed and this time I was going to add cardio into my workout just to see if it improved my riding. At the end of this journey I had not worked out 45 days in a row, I actually went for close to 60. For those 60 days I lifted and ran one mile Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I went to a spinning class Tuesday and Thursday, and I would Mt. Bike Saturday and Sunday. At the end I was down to 167lbs, and I had never felt better in my life, and I could now ride with the fast group, yeah!!!

Once this time was up I made a trip back to Idaho and went on a Mt. bike ride in the foothills with my cousins, well myself and Fabian Rode, Karen and Kelly hiked, and Todd ran. Afterwards Todd and I were talking and he was telling my how much he enjoyed running outdoors. Since this is supposed to be a brief history I will cut to the chase and let you know that I decided to give it a try.

Here I am two months later and I have been running 3-4 times a week, generally in the morning, and enjoying it as some of my most peaceful time of the day. Now I have set a new goal, to run the Austin Marathon, Feb 20th 2011. I am a slow runner and my only intention is to finish the race, which will be a major accomplishment. My intention is to use this blog to help track my goal and allow others to track it as well, today was the first official run for my training.
